/dev/sda is the first hard drive (the primary master), /dev/sdb is the second etc. The numbers refer to partitions, so /dev/sda1 is the first partition of the first drive. It is likely that your external drive will not be /dev/sda, that is more likely to be the internal drive of your machine.

I have muddled thru and was able to mount a 22TB xfs partition. This will show with df -h. When i reboot to test the changes listed to the fstab i see that the 22tb partition is now /dev/sdb. occasionally i even see it as sdc The term sd stands for SCSI disk, that is to say, it means Small Computer System Interface disk.
